Learn to Remember by Dominic O ‘Brien
Reviewed by Janet Taylor

While being assessed for the Disabled Students Allowance, I realised that my working memory was in the 4th percentile, so I though this book would be helpful. It was a bargain at £2.99 from the Book Depot. The book promises the following : ”discover untapped memory powers, develop instant recall and never forget names.
The ND author ,Dominic O Brien has dyslexia and difficulties concentrating and like many of us, he underachieved in school. In his early 40s he trained his memory by researching into many memory concentration techniques He has the ND gift of determination and perseverance which has won him the world Memory Championships eight times.

The book is beautifully illustrated and easy to understand and makes an excellent introductory textbook for those studying memory and the psychology of learning, as well as having 25 exercises to help improve the memory and concentration. This includes visualisation techniques, memory meditation warm up, making a memory chain.  He also gives memory tips for everyday life such as matching names with faces, using a mental diary, finding the right words in crosswords, and memorising speeches. There is a chapter on study skills including things such as reading and retaining, speed reading, retrieving memories all of which can be problematic for NDs.

I have not yet tried these techniques to see if they work and would be interested in any feedback from any Focus reader who buys this book and does the memory exercises to see if their memory and concentration
Improve.
